Andi Renreng, fondly known as Bung Andi, is an alumnus of the Undergraduate Program in Communication at Universitas Sumatera Utara, class of 2004, and currently serves as the Marketing Director of Xiaomi Indonesia. His career journey illustrates how a solid academic foundation and campus experience can shape someone to hold strategic roles in the global tech industry. Since joining Xiaomi in 2017 as Product PR Lead, Bung Andi has demonstrated remarkable growth in his contributions, eventually being entrusted to lead the company’s marketing strategy as of August 2024.

His strong reputation in communication and marketing has gained national recognition. Earlier this year (2025), Bung Andi was named in FORTUNE Indonesia’s 40 Under 40 list, which honors 40 of the most influential young figures under 40 as of December 31, 2024. This accolade highlights his influence and contribution in shaping digital marketing in Indonesia, particularly in the technology sector.

 

While a student in the Undergraduate Program in Communication at USU, Bung Andi didn’t just focus on classroom learning—he was also actively involved in student organizations. He believes that the theories taught—such as Public Speaking, Advertising, and Mass Communication—were essential and highly relevant to the professional world. However, just as important, in his view, was the organizational experience that helped him build confidence and the ability to collaborate with diverse individuals. Bung Andi said this combination of theory and practice played a crucial role in developing his professional competitiveness.

Bung Andi’s career began as a senior event manager at PT Airaa (Rpro), followed by roles in various media and technology companies. He was Head of Media Relations and Event Promotion at Inilah.com, MarComm Manager at Berita Satu Media Holdings, and Marketing and PR Manager at Huawei Technologies. Each stage of his career enriched his perspective and capabilities across sectors, from media to technology.

 

“Besides mastering theory, it’s also important to develop adaptability,” Bung Andi advised students. “That way, we can apply what we’ve learned more effectively and excel across fields, not just in communication. And most importantly, in my opinion, before delivering a message to others, listen to your inner voice first. That’s very important.”

 

Bung Andi’s story is a powerful example that a strong academic foundation, the courage to keep learning, and the ability to listen to one’s inner voice are keys to going far in the professional world. From the classrooms of the Undergraduate Program in Communication at USU to leading marketing strategy at one of the world’s top tech companies, Bung Andi proves that FISIP USU graduates are capable of competing, adapting, and making real contributions on a global scale. His journey not only reflects personal success but also serves as an inspiration for today’s students: that the social sciences are not a boundary, but a bridge to countless opportunities.
