FIB USU PR - The Indonesian Music and Dance Performance "Celebrating Diversity" organized by the Ethnomusicology Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) on Friday 3 November 2023 evening at the USU Auditorium was a success. The concert, as part of the celebration of USU 71st Anniversary and FIB 58th Anniversary, was attended by 1500 spectators, featuring Tradition Maestros, Lecturers and students from the USU FIB Ethnomusicology Study Program.
In his remarks, USU's Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., appreciated this activity and supported the Ethnomusicology Study Program as the vanguard of USU's 2020-2024 Design achievements.

The Rector added that USU always collaborates in the transformation movement which covers all lines of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education to contribute towards a Golden Indonesia 2045.
Meanwhile, Performance Director Dra. Rithaony Hutajulu, M.A. said, as an educational institution, the Ethnomusicology Study Program is not only a center for arts studies but also plays a role in preserving and developing traditional arts performances. "The Ethnomusicology Study Program was the first (Ethnomusicology-ed) study program established in Indonesia in 1979. As a scientific discipline that studies music in a cultural context, ethnomusicology is not only a center of study but also preserves and develops traditional performing arts so that they are relevant to current world developments." explained the Performance Director who is also the Head of the Ethnomusicology Study Program.
Dean of FIB USU Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., said he was very proud of the first concert held by USU's FIB Ethnomusicology study program. “This performance is an accumulation of students' practical class learning processes. This concert is the application of knowledge resulting from collaboration between lecturers and students. "Students learn professionally, both from an artistic, stage and production management perspective," added Heristina Dewi as Deputy Dean II FIB USU and Coordinator of Performing Artists.
The concert, which presented traditional music and dance material, ranging from Malay, Simalungun, Karo, Toba, Nias, Pakpak, Mandailing, Minangkabau, Javanese, Kolintang, Angklung, Choir and Western Classical Music, succeeded in impressing the audience. For more than two hours, the general audience as well as VIP guests (Consul General of America, Consul General of Japan, Consul General of Germany, Consul General of India, Kadisbudpar North Sumatra, Kadispar Medan, Secretary of the USU MWA, Chair & Secretary of the Council of Professors, and others) and other guests did not move from their respective seats.
One of the spectators, Feybi Purba, admitted that this concert succeeded in presenting an interesting performance.
“This concert is interesting. It is not easy to adjust the sound colors of various traditional musical instruments on stage to be harmonious. "Salute to ethno," stressed Feybi, who works as a sound engineer and owner of a music recording studio.
The music and dance coaches for this concert are Toba Batak music maestros Marsius Sitohang, Hubari Gulo, Arifninetrirosa, Dermawan Purba, Fadlin Jafar, Yoe Anto Ginting, Sapna Sitopu, Tengku Ryo, Datuk Ahmad Fauzi, Nurmala Maibang, Zulalinury, Joshua Samosir, Karto Situmorang , Tahan Manurung, Ngartini Huang, Michael Panggabean, Mario Sinaga, and Ahmad Arief Tarigan as stage managers.
